Jorge Costa’s sad passing last year is still being felt at FC Porto.
The legendary defender died aged 53 in August and tributes flooded in across the globe, including from a teary Jose Mourinho with whom he won the Champions League.
Since retiring Costa had become Porto‘s director of football, and one of his last jobs was convincing Francesco Farioli to join from Ajax, a decision that has proved masterful.
Reflecting on his arrival in an interview with Sport TV, the Italian said: “Although I unfortunately didn’t have much time with him, it is very clear who Jorge was, is and always will be for FC Porto.
“His presence is palpable everywhere. His legacy will never fade.
“On December 31st, I was sitting at home watching the footage of my presentation, and Jorge appeared in almost every shot, trying to help me and convey what FC Porto is.”
An emotional Farioli then began crying as he continued: “He was with us every day at training, watching the players suffer, almost throwing up on the pitch. That’s why he stays with us.
“There will always be a flag at the DragĂŁo, to keep him with us. For his family and for the Porto family. He will always be with us. The title fight is also for him.”
