Erik ten Hag returning to FC Twente was enough of a shock before it became clear it wasn’t even as head coach.
The Eredivisie side dropped a bombshell on Tuesday night by announcing the signing of the man who lasted just five games at Bayer Leverkusen this season.
But Ten Hag will instead be taking up the role as technical director moving out of the dugout despite winning eight titles with Ajax and Manchester United.
Telling Twente’s website why he made the switch, the local lad made clear he always wanted to come back to the team where he began and ended his playing career.
“I think it’s wonderful and special to return to FC Twente, where I’ve been a supporter at Het Diekman since I was a young boy,” he said.
“My football and coaching careers began here. With my experience in youth development, team building, and elite sports culture, I want to strengthen FC Twente’s technical foundation together with the supervisory board, management, and staff, so that the club can sustainably realise its potential as a regional flagship.”
