UPDATE: Match finishes 2-0
No more goals were scored in the 14:30pm behind closed doors 10 minute match.
As such, Heerenveen can only improve one place on the final day.
NAC Breda will be making the most pointless trip in their history today by taking on Heerenveen in the Eredivisie.
NAC are already relegated from the top flight with two games to play, and their second-to-last match saw some disruptions from supporters.
With NAC leading 2-0, fireworks were thrown onto the pitch from the ultras as results elsewhere rendered their victory pointless.
The match was twice stopped before being abandoned with 10 minutes to play.
Now, the Dutch football association [KNVB] have ordered the final 10 minutes to be completed, with NAC unable to play at home, instead having to travel 200kilometres across the Netherlands back to Heerenveen on Monday afternoon.
NAC said in a statement: “The KNVB has informed NAC and sc Heerenveen that the match must be played to completion, given the importance of the game for the Frisian team and their rivals.
“Due to safety reasons, permission has not been granted to complete the match in Breda.”
NAC are seven points from safety so even a bigger score and a final day win won’t be enough to avoid relegation.
As for Heerenveen, they currently sit seventh in the top flight, with fifth to eighth going through to Conference League play-offs.
On this occasion, ninth will feature in the play-offs as sixth-placed AZ have already booked a Europa League spot with their KNVB Beker win.
Heerenveen can head off the teams below them by taking a draw or win, but to move up they’d have to score three times in 10 minutes to leapfrog Ajax in the table.
Still, an extra goal or more gives them a great chance heading into the final day.
