No player is bigger than Atletico Madrid, not even Julian Alvarez.
The Argentinian striker continues to draw headlines over links to Barcelona, links he didn’t deny after his starring role in a 5-2 first-leg Champions League win over Tottenham.
Asked if he’d stay at Atleti next season, he stupidly answered ‘maybe yes, maybe no’ much to the displeasure of Atletico fans.
However, his manager (who he supposedly doesn’t get on with) Diego Simeone, blames the media for their role.
Speaking ahead of the reverse fixture, he commented: “We beat Club Brugge 4-1 and the best player on the pitch was Oblak because he made one or two crucial saves.
“We won the match against Barcelona 4-0 and the newspaper headlines were saying Griezmann might leave.
“And Julián Álvarez made some perfectly reasonable comments the other day.”
He continued: “Our lives are lived day by day, and we value people based on what they give us, and Julián Álvarez is giving us a lot.
“The 5-2 victory against Tottenham and everything else is being attributed to Julián Álvarez.
“I’m telling our fans that we’re fine. I said we were going to compete when the season started, and we’re doing well.
“You know how much I trust and believe in him. He’s a player I have faith in, and I want him to play many more games here and continue to increase his appearance total.”
