Didier Deschamps has done enough to stay as France coach for the 2026 World Cup.
It’s been widely reported in France that by reaching the semi-finals of Euro 2024, Deschamps has triggered a two-year extension in his contract.
France are yet to score a goal in open play at the championships in Germany, and Deschamps has been pilloried for numerous issues including Kylian Mbappe’s form and his inability to find a new system up front without Olivier Giroud.
That’s led to plenty of frustration in the media, particularly with an out-of-work Zinedine Zidane waiting in the wings and understood to be desperate for the job.
One of those who’s certainly had enough of the 2018 World Cup winner is RMC Sport editor Daniel Riolo, who said before the tournament: “I don’t like his vision of football. Everything he says bores me.
“He wouldn’t find a place in any club side today. That’s how vintage he is. He’s so vintage that he could actually find zero work.
“Ultimately, we don’t care whether he finds a place in a club or not, but he recently said this in an interview: ‘When you don’t get the result, we don’t remember you.’ Which is absolutely stupid.
“We’ve told him a thousand times, we have a thousand proofs of that. We have France 82, France 86, Netherlands 74 and 78. We have tons of teams that people loved even though they didn’t win.”
Riolo added: “It’s painful to imagine the 2026 World Cup. It’s very hard to imagine another World Cup with him. It’s hard, it’s long.
“That’s enough, go away. We want to see a fresh perspective, we want to see Zidane at the head of the Blues.
“Let’s see something else, new players, a new way of playing, a new speech. That’s good, guys who stay so long no longer exist.”
