Didier Deschamps and Antoine Griezmann have entered a rather awkward war of words.
The France head coach responded strongly after comments about their style of play from the Atletico Madrid great. Asked if France are a boring team in a press conference a day earlier, Griezmann responded: “It’s boring to watch but that’s how it is, it makes you win.”
When those comments were put to Deschamps, he was quick to correct his forward.
“Antoine said that? I don’t control what the players say,” he replied. No, honestly I wasn’t aware he thought that.
“That doesn’t interest me. You bring out a word, a sentence, as can happen for me, when I can say things before and after out of context.
“Does the French team have to be boring to watch to go far? What does that mean? Has it been boring for you in recent years? Look elsewhere, you’ll see what they think of us.
“It’s not about being boring. The more you control, the better, but there are opponents who are there, who have their strengths. It’s not about being boring or not, it’s about being effective.
“The more you have the ball, the better, but when you don’t have it, at the high level, you have to be able to defend.
“We were world champions in 2018 if I remember correctly. Were we a good champion or a bad champion? We were champions.”
