The possibility of Lionel Messi playing at the very top level in club football appears to be increasing.
So far Messi‘s Inter Miami have played the biggest stage of the Club World Cup, but the Copa Libertadores would be far, far bigger.
South America’s Champions League has previously hosted teams from central and north America, and president of CONMEBOL [South American federation] has commented on the possibility of it happening again.
Alejandro Domínguez told Globo Esporte: “It’s an issue that needs to be discussed within Concacaf [North and Central American federation].
“It’s been done before, but we have great respect for the other confederations.
“However, it is an honour that teams from other confederations look to the Libertadores Cup as a benchmark for international and global competition.”
Furthermore, Miami’s billionaire owner Jorge Mas continues to push for the MLS and Mexican Liga MX champions to be included.
“If slots could be combined for MLS and MX, the competition would be bigger and more attractive,” he recently commented.
“I would like to play in the Copa Libertadores, I say it publicly. I think that the champions of MLS and Liga MX are perhaps more deserving of a spot.”
