If Claudio Ranieri wasn’t already an AS Roma legend, he’s now cemented his place in club history.
The Rome born coach returned to his boyhood club this season and nearly took them from a relegation battle to the Champions League in a remarkable turnaround.
Arguably the coach of the season in Serie A, and undoubtedly the coach of the second half of the season, Italy fans are now demanding his hiring after Luciano Spalletti was fired in shock scenes.
Ranieri’s plan was to step away from coaching for good this summer and become Roma’s director, a job which he’s already started by hiring Gian Piero Gasperini as his replacement.
Yet he’s now revealed that Roma’s Friedkin owners were classy enough to allow him to talk to Italy, but he rejected it for the club of his heart.
In a message to Corriere dello Sport that he allowed them to publish, he wrote: “I have decided to give up [coaching].
“The Friedkins had left me free to choose, but I promised to stop, if I had continued we would not have taken Gasperini, I only want to think about Roma.”
