Girondins Bordeaux have officially missed out on promotion to the National 1, and it’s bad news for Andy Carroll.
League leaders Stade Briochin beat Avranches 3-2 on Friday night, meaning it’s now mathematically impossible for Bordeaux to beat them to the one and only promotion spot in the National 2.
The fourth tier in France is divided into three regional leagues, meaning only one team from each goes up to the National 1, the third tier and final semi-pro league before Ligue 2.
Bordeaux played in Ligue 2 last season before their administrative relegation under the much maligned Gerard Lopez.
Given their history as one of France’s biggest sides, former England, Liverpool, Newcastle and West Ham striker Carroll made a surprise arrival to help them back up.
It was later revealed he was earning just €1600 a month, by far the lowest salary of his career, and the 15th highest in the squad.
Carroll did manage to top up that figure with 10 goals for a €2000 bonus, but he has missed out on a big promotion upgrade.
Going up would have upped his salary all the way to €13,000 per-month for €156,000 per-year.
But without that bonus, it’s safe to assume his Bordeaux future is in doubt.
