The dishonour of being football’s worst owner is a tough battle, but Gerard Lopez is doing his best to make 2024/25 his own.
The Luxembourgish businessman saw his French side Girondins de Bordeaux relegated from France’s second tier Ligue 2 to the fourth tier National 2 last summer after failing to meet financial requirements.
If destroying a seven-time French champion wasn’t bad enough for his business portfolio, Lopez has now done the same with a Portuguese champion.
2001 Primeira Liga title winners Boavista are in such a rut under Lopez that they were unable to submit the necessary documents to the FPF Licensing Committee.
Having already finished bottom of the top flight, their mismanagement means the lack of paperwork gave the FPF no choice but to send them out of the top leagues to the fifth tier.
In 2022, Belgian side Royal Excel Mouscron also went bankrupt under Lopez’s ownership, as have Formula 1 team Lotus.
