Benfica have given a dressing down to news outlets that widely reported what they say are fake quotes from Jose Mourinho.
A number of South American websites ran quotes where he said Carlo Ancelotti ‘made a huge mistake’ by not calling Neymar up to the Brazil squad.
Others in Europe picked up a story that Mourinho said Portugal are ‘average’ when Cristiano Ronaldo doesn’t play.
The quotes weren’t attributed, and Benfica have now said they were made up.
“The Benfica coach hasn’t made any statements of this kind to anyone; it’s pure invention,” the Lisbon side told Corriere dello Sport.
