Watching Benfica down Fenerbahce you’d think Kerem Akturkoglu used to play for the Turkish side, but in some ways the opposite was in fact the case.
The winger scored the winning goal for the Eagles to send them into the 2025/26 Champions League with a 1-0 aggregate win.
Having netted in the 35th minute, Akturkoglu held up his hands and refused to celebrate before being mobbed by his teammates.
Such scenes normally occur when a player faces a former side, but on this occasion Akturkoglu may have scored against his future side.
The 44-time Turkey international has been pursued throughout the summer by Fenerbahce who are yet to agree on a price with Benfica.
Labelled Mourinho’s dream target, it was obviously an awkward moment for the Başakşehir academy graduate and former Galatasaray man who clearly wants to return to Istanbul.
On top of that, he was a notable absentee for Benfica’s squad photo in the dressing room post-match, perhaps further trying to put himself back in Fener’s good books.
