One of the most underrated players in modern history, Angel Di Maria will at least have an incredible record to be remembered by.
The Benfica attacker spent the past year being linked with a return to Rosario Central and also Inter Miami, but he ended up staying in Portugal.
That’s been to the benefit of everyone involved, with the Argentina legend racking up eight goals and five assists in his last 13 games for the Eagles.
In particularly hot form recently with a hat-trick against Amadora in the Taça de Portugal, Di Maria followed up with a match-winning display against Monaco in the Champions League.
In that clash he registered two assists in a 3-2 victory, taking him to 41 assists in the competition.
That figure takes him ahead of countryman Lionel Messi, and leaves him just one behind Cristiano Ronaldo’s all-time record.
With both of those players out of Europe, the record is now Di Maria’s to take, and Benfica look set to give him more time, currently sitting 14th in the league phase.
Di Maria’s closest active competition for the record is Bayern Munich’s Thomas Muller on 30 assists, showing just how unbeatable the record would be.
