Bayern Munich’s Josip Stanisic likely won’t be taking up a career in comedy after retiring.
The versatile defender has caused outrage online after joking about Achraf Hakimi’s injury in a 2-1 win over PSG.
Hakimi left the pitch in tears when two-goal matchwinner Luis Diaz went through the back of him for a certain red card.
Reports claim Hakimi’s injury isn’t as bad as first feared, despite leaving the stadium on crutches, but Stanisic wasn’t to know.
Asked about the flashpoint he said: “He [Diaz] knows himself that he needs to handle the situation more tactfully.”
He was then asked if Diaz apologised at half-time and he joked: “No, we thanked him!
“I’m kidding! He was happy after the match, like all of us.”
Despite his clarification, Stanisic’s comments have been run across the French media, and will add more fuel to the fire should the two European giants meet again in the knockout rounds.
Giving a more measured take, Bayern‘s Vincent Kompany said: “At first, I didn’t think it was that serious.
“But of course, it happened, and when a player gets injured, I always think about what happened to Jamal Musiala. He broke his leg against PSG in the United States.
“You wonder then, ‘Is it comparable?’ But honestly, the most important thing for me is that Hakimi isn’t injured for too long. I wish him a speedy recovery.”
