There was a rather strange but heartwarming moment before Barcelona faced Club Brugge away in the Champions League as Hansi Flick was presented with a letter.
Belgium great Franky Van der Elst, who is now working as an analyst, had the final press conference question and spoke of his admiration for Flick’s appreciation of his side’s mega 7-6 semi-final defeat to Inter last season.
He asked: “When you said that after the matches it is important to be able to hug the opponent, when you were about to reach the Champions League final. Would you say that now?”
Flick responded: “As a coach, you have a philosophy and you have to put it into practice. The way we played against Inter was incredible. Why don’t we always play like that?”
Van der Elst then said: “I wrote you a letter, I hope you accept it. It has nothing to do with the match. A missive composed of 90% love and 1% some reproach.”
