Keep politics out of sport, unless you’re in Lille.
Lille supporters have let their reputation precede them again with tributes to far-right leader Jean-Marie Le Pen ahead of their Ligue 1 clash against Auxerre.
The former anti-immigration anti-EU National Front leader died on January 7th at the age of 96 and a group of LOSC supporters sang his name at kick-off, according to numerous attendees who spoke to SOFOOT and others.
The DVE ultras group already have a history of far-right leanings and violence, and several supporters from both Lille and outside took to social media to condemn the moment and give their series of events.
Many claimed that Auxerre boos and whistles drowned out the signing, while some say that the DVE went on to hold a moment of silence.
Sadly for both clubs and organisers, the match ended in a boring 0-0, giving no headlines to overshadow an unpleasant story.
