The 2026 Finalissima may not take place after Argentina’s Lionel Scaloni cast doubt over the traditional match.
The one-off tie pits together the European and South American champions, but it’s been heavily criticised for being played in Qatar rather than Spain or Argentina.
The date of March is also rumoured to be a problem, with neither side wanting to lose face so close to the World Cup.
Arriving in Washington for the World Cup draw, Argentina coach Scaloni was asked about reports that his team had lost interest in the match.
“It’s not so much because of the inconvenience,” he said. “But I think it could have been played earlier.
“We’re waiting. I spoke with Luis de la Fuente, who, besides being the Spanish national team coach, is a friend of mine. He gave me the coaching course, and he hasn’t confirmed it either.”
Rafael Louzán, head of the Spanish FA, added: “We are finalizing the details. We could have news about it within a week at the most.”
