After a horror first year as Porto president, Andre Villas-Boas is attempting to win back fans.
The former Porto head coach contended with battles with Sergio Conceicao and club ultras before two coaching hires completely flopped to leave the regular title challengers even struggling to make the top three.
Now, though, with former Ajax manager Francesco Farioli hired, Villas-Boas is finally feeling bullish for the first time in his job.
Speaking to the media after unveiling the Italian, he said: “There was no success in the previous situations, and with the utmost respect for the work of Vítor Bruno and Martín Anselmi.
“Therefore, there is a need for reinforcements, which will happen. We have no doubt that the last group guaranteed us success, but… In January, FC Porto was forced to manoeuvre in the market in a certain way, which took away some of our sporting competitiveness in the name of the club’s financial sustainability.
“Now we can work in the market, because we can amortize and we could be talking about the biggest market ever in the history of FC Porto.
“The coach will observe the group in these first few weeks and then we will make decisions.”
