One of the best things to come out of Ajax’s academy in a long time, Mika Godts will not be going to the World Cup.
The 20-year-old forward was left out of Rudi Garcia’s squad for the tournament in the Americas.
Godts has scored 17 goals and registered 14 assists in 41 games for Ajax this season, making him a bright spark in an otherwise average squad.
On April 26th he went viral for a stunning solo goal against NAC Breda that will likely earn him a Puskas Award nomination.
Godts picked the ball up on the halfway line and sat defenders down six times before doing the same to the goalkeeper and scoring.
The effort has seen him widely compared to former Ajax striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic who famously scored a similarly iconic Eredivisie goal.
Such a season has seen Godts linked with a Premier League move, with Newcastle reportedly eyeing him as an Anthony Gordon replacement.
Yet despite all the success, it wasn’t enough for Garcia, who called Godts up in March, but not for the World Cup.
