Jordan Henderson has spoken out on one of the most bizarre nights of his career.
The Ajax captain, who may well now be the former Ajax captain, handed over the armband ahead of a 2-1 Europea League win over Galatasaray on January 30th.
The background was a surprise move to Monaco, yet Henderson played the match, and later the move fell through.
Next up was Feyenoord in the Eredivisie for Ajax, and Henderson took back the armband for a huge 2-1 win that puts them right in the title race, and they could go top ahead of PSV with their game in hand.
Speaking post-match, the former Liverpool captain opened up on a bizarre Thursday night and tried to clarify matters.
“As you could see in the game against Galatasaray, I didn’t know what was going to happen,” Henderson said. “After that, I had a number of conversations with the club. Fortunately, we came to the conclusion together that it is best to stay until the end of the season.
“My plan was to stay anyway. A lot was written that was taken out of context. Lies, things that weren’t true. It was disrespectful. About how I was as a person and that I had behaved unprofessionally.
“That’s not true and that hurts. Things about my performance on the field are fine with me, but about me personally, that hurts. I have family too. Parents, wife, children, friends. And they all had to read that too.”
He added on the captaincy situation: “The reason I wasn’t captain was because I knew what was going on in the background. Then it didn’t feel comfortable to be captain that night. But I just did my job. I gave everything and was fully focused.
“I didn’t know what would happen. It could have been my last match. The club is in a certain financial situation and I wanted to think about that. My salary is always a thing in the media. But we came to the conclusion that this is the best thing.”
Henderson went on to confirm that he’ll “100%” stay until the end of the season when the situation will then be reassessed.
