In the latest chapter of John Textor’s high-profile football ownership drama he’s making more enemies at the one club he was still popular at.

Botafogo, who he guided to their first Copa Libertadores, have been placed on FIFA’s transfer ban list ahead of Brazil’s winter transfer window.

The ban is until the winter of 2027, however, Textor’s club are confident they’ll be back in action for Brazil’s transfer window from January to March.

A club statement said: “Regarding the recent FIFA sanction on athlete transfers, Botafogo informs that, in recent weeks, it has maintained constructive conversations with representatives of Atlanta United, from the MLS, in search of an agreement related to the Thiago Almada case.

“The conversations were paused due to the year-end recess and will be resumed shortly. Botafogo expects to have the matter resolved before the start of, or right at the beginning of, the transfer window.

“The Club will be very active in signing players in January 2026.”
