Jose Mourinho admits ‘great regret’ in signing Kerem Akturkoglu from Benfica before Fenerbahce sacking

Jose Mourinho has admitted another mistake over his Fenerbahce career.

The Benfica coach was sacked by the Istanbul giants at the start of the current campaign and may have crossed paths with Kerem Akturkoglu who went the other way.

The Turkish winger scored in the Champions League play-offs for Benfica, knocking Fener out of the competition.

The result saw Mourinho get sacked, and then a £20million deal for Akturkoglu went through.

Mourinho had publicly chased the player for weeks in Turkey, so to never play him and then end up without him at Benfica was the ultimate irony.

Discussing Akturkoglu, Mourinho said: “I liked Benfica’s squad so much that I wanted to take a very important player from them, and I did everything I could to achieve that.

“Perhaps that was one of the reasons I ended up leaving Fenerbahçe: the frustration of not being able to take away from Benfica a player I considered fundamental to my way of thinking about the game.

“It was with great regret that, indirectly, I contributed to the squad’s change.

“It’s my fault. I did everything I could to have him with me, and I ended up not having him at Fenerbahçe or Benfica.”
