Lennart Karl continued his fine start at Bayern Munich by becoming their youngest-ever Champions League scorer, but pundit Mario Basler isn’t impressed.
The 17-year-old scored the first of the match in a 4-0 win over Club Brugge and also took home the man of the match award, but Basler wouldn’t back down on his critique of the player.
When asked if Karl had changed his mind, the former Bayern and Germany regular said: “No. Why? No, I think he’s being made out to be bigger than he actually is.
“But that was good. But it was against Brugge. There are reasons why he doesn’t start against Dortmund, for example.
“There will be reasons why he won’t start in the next game against Arsenal either. He’s a young player, a good player. But I still believe he won’t make it at Bayern Munich.
“I think he’s missing quite a bit. I mean, his height — he can’t do anything about that. He won’t suddenly grow taller.
“He’s a good footballer. But again, in the end, not good enough for Bayern Munich. Because I think Bayern will make a big push on the transfer market next year.
“Bayern will, just like with Paul Wanner, eventually loan him out — probably after this season. Maybe in winter, but more likely in summer, because the squad isn’t deep enough right now. I think he’ll be loaned out in the summer to get more playing time.”
