Gerard Pique isn’t one to hold back, even when the people he’s talking about are in the same room.
The Barcelona legend attended LaLiga‘s headquarters for an Uber Eats event and wasn’t at all embarrassed to lay into his old rivals despite one of them sitting right next to him.
Pique was asked to respond to the hottest topic in Spanish football, Real Madrid sending a letter to complain about refereeing after Carlos Romero wasn’t punished for a horror challenge on Kylian Mbappe during a 1-0 LaLiga win for Espanyol.
The letter hasn’t gone down well, and Pique answered in hilarious fashion, saying: “The statement is a complete smokescreen.
“They’ve been doing it for 120 years. When they lose, they have to talk about something else. That’s what they want.
“The referees are like that and they’ll always be like that. They’re going to make mistakes.
“Madrid has always done it and we’re used to the media pressure and turning on the machines when things don’t go well. From then on, the referees are going to be under pressure.”
Casillas was sitting beside his old rival unable to hold back his laughter, but Pique was happy to make things even more awkward for his pal.
When asked about young talent in LaLiga, he responded: “There is a lot of young talent, in the case of Barça it comes from La Masía and in the case of Madrid it comes from the checkbook. But I think it has a promising future.”
And finally, on the final LaLiga standings, he said: “Barça first, Atlético second, Athletic third. Watch out, they’re there.”
