Barcelona legend Gerard Pique has given some interesting insight into old rivals Real Madrid.
Madrid are six points behind LaLiga leaders Barca with a game in hand, but that doesn’t tell the full story.
The reigning Champions League winners have looked incoherent throughout the season, culminating in a 4-1 Clasico humiliation.
In Europe things haven’t been much better with two defeats from four, and Pique thinks the explanation is clear, and down to their summer spending.
“Historically, when they have wanted to gather so many stars, they have always failed, he said.
“They have a team but it is always difficult to manage egos. At the end of the day, there are eleven players and there are many stars.”
Speaking about new additions Kylian Mbappe and Endrick, he added: “It is necessary that the best players understand each other and they must pass the ball to each other.
“When each takes to war on his own the teams stop being teams and become individuals.”
Conversely, Barcelona have been flying under Hansi Flick, something Pique didn’t expect, particularly with so much youth involvement.
“I didn’t expect everything to go so well, I thought we would compete until the end but the results are better than expected,” he commented.
“This team is full of young people and it’s causing all the excitement across the world. They are brave, they take risks, they draw the line in the middle of the field.
“They will make mistakes but they have the whole race ahead of them… The first time you experience things like winning at the Bernabéu it is experienced in a very different way.”
