After their worst season in over decade, Bayern Munich sporting director Max Eberl isn’t taking any prisoners.
The highly-rated executive has been in his job since the start of 2024 and had to witness the team slump to a trophyless season before being publicly humiliated in their attempts to replace Thomas Tuchel.
However, now Eberl is back in his element in the transfer window, and after some impressive arrivals, there could be some mammoth departures.
Bayern have already landed Michael Olise, Joao Palhinha and Hiroki Ito, and it looks like Xavi Simons and Jonathan Tah could soon follow.
That could represent a huge outlay for Bayern, and funding it could be some gigantic departures.
When asked about the future of Joshua Kimmich in his latest press conference, Eberl was far from committal, saying: “He still has a year left on his contract. We agreed that we would talk to each other after his vacation.
“Joshua is a very good player, but it is generally true that professional football is a competitive sport – we cannot say to any player per se: ‘Hey, you are the one who is set in place’.
“There is no doubt that Joshua has made great contributions to FC Bayern. Nevertheless, everyone at FC Bayern has to accept the fight for a regular place.”
Eberl was even less keen to make any promises about Goretzka, responding to a question about the midfielder by saying: “When it comes to putting together a squad, that doesn’t always mean having the 20 best players together, but rather the 20 who work together best on the pitch.”
