Luka Modric set for messy Real Madrid exit

Luka Modric‘s iconic Real Madrid career will come to an end in the summer.

Cadena SER report that the 38-year-old legend will not sign an extension, having been informed that he won’t be given any extra minutes.

After a public, but far from unceremonious, falling out with Carlo Ancelotti over his place in the team, Modric has been guaranteed that things won’t get any better next season.

The Croatian has regularly complained about his role off the bench, and although he’s returned to the side in recent months, it’s been pointed out to the midfield star that this is mainly due to injuries.

Toni Kroos instead is further up the pecking order, and is still only getting a year extension.

Ancelotti is instead keen to move on to the new generation of Jude Bellingham, Fede Valverde, Aurélien Tchouaméni and Eduardo Camavinga.

That quartet have had to spend time out of midfield this season with a lack of depth up front and injuries at the back, but that issue is expected to be eased next term with several new signings, namely Endrick and Alphonso Davies.

That means Modric will either have to accept a reduced role, or leave, and has accepted the latter.

Cadena SER claim that the Croatian has already turned down numerous lucrative offers from the Saudi Pro League, but MLS could be an option.

However, they don’t rule out retirement after Euro 2024.
