Carlo Ancelotti has admitted that joining Brazil was always his second choice after staying at Real Madrid.
The legendary Italian signed an extension in Spain on December 29, keeping him at the club until 2026.
The deal came after months of speculation, with Ancelotti’s previous contract expiring in the summer.
In July, former Brazilian FA president Ednaldo Rodrigues insured fans that Ancelotti would be the nation’s next manager, taking charge in time for the Copa America.
That seemed to shut the door on a Madrid renewal, but Ancelotti has now revealed he hadn’t quite given his word.
He explained: “The reality is that I had contact with the Brazilian team, with its president, Ednaldo Rodrígues, to whom I thank him for his love and interest in coaching Brazil, something that made me feel very proud,
“But everything was pending the decision of Real Madrid. In recent months Ednaldo stopped being president and in the end, what happened has been what I have always wanted: to stay at Real Madrid.
“I don’t know if Brazil will want me in 2026 and I don’t know if they will be happy with my decision.”
Ancelotti also admitted that even if Brazil were interesting in two-and-a-half years time, his preference would still be the Bernabeu.
“In 2026 I hope I can continue here and that this will not be my last contract,” he added.
“Hopefully I can continue being the coach of Real Madrid in 2027 or 2028.”
