Gerard Piqué has given a damning assessment of old rivals Real Madrid and their continued rivalry with Barcelona.
The Barça legend and King’s League president is always good value in media interviews, and his latest is no different.
Madrid and Barça’s rivalry seems to have been reignited after a few uncompetitive years in LaLiga, and Joan Laporta hasn’t helped matters.
The Barça president has been speaking about ‘sociological Madridism’ surrounding the Nigeria match-fixing case.
Piqué was asked for his thoughts and commented: “In our country, there are more supporters of Madrid than Barça, especially since Madrid is the capital.
“We will consistently find ourselves on the opposing side, aiming to be a nuisance.
“There’s no need to engage in these battles; instead, we should focus on charting our unique path, even though it’s intertwined with theirs due to the rivalry.”
Piqué was far less nuanced on Madrid’s 14th Champions League title though.
“The current Real Madrid team follows a similar pattern – they may not dazzle, but they achieve results,” he said.
“Come February, they will remain competitive in all competitions, including the Champions League, and we shall see what unfolds.
“When we triumph, our glory endures for eternity, while their victories often blend into the background.
“The most recent one, which almost seemed miraculous as they were the underdogs in every round, is destined to fade into obscurity.”
