Despite being absent for AC Milan’s draw with Lazio at the weekend, club advisor Zlatan Ibrahimovic still made his presence felt in the dressing room after.
Milan drew at home to make it a winless start under Paulo Fonseca three games into the Serie A season.
The Portuguese coach has come under plenty of pressure, something that was not helped by some headline images in the 73rd minute of the match.
When a drinks break was called at the Stadio Olimpico, star players Theo Hernandez and Rafael Leao stood on the touchline waiting to go back on, rather than joining in the pitchside huddle where Fonseca tried to produce some tactics.
It was an awful look for the club, and something Hernandez clarified post-match, saying: “We had been on for two minutes and we didn’t need the cooling break.
“There was nothing against the team and the coach. People talk and say things that aren’t true. Rafa and I are here to help the group. For us that’s the only important thing.”
Yet despite his claims that were backed up by Fonseca in his post-match interview, it’s now being claimed that Ibrahimovic got involved.
The club advisor wasn’t present for the match, but Gazzetta Italia report that he still had his say, phoning Hernandez and Leao to lay down the law and make his voice heard.
It’s also been reaffirmed to the players that Fonseca is in charge and has the club’s full support. We’ll see how long that lasts.
