Xavi has spoken to the world’s media after confirming his decision to stay at Barcelona.
The club legend announced that he would be leaving the club at the end of the season after a damaging 5-3 defeat to Villarreal on January 27.
Things drastically improved on the field following that announcement, however, the Spaniard’s renewal comes shortly after being knocked out of the Champions League by PSG and surrendering LaLiga to rivals Real Madrid.
This isn’t just about results, though, as Xavi told the press.
“It has not been an easy decision,” he began. “In January I conveyed to the president, Deco and the board that it was the best for the club. Now the circumstances have changed. Yesterday we spoke about it very directly.
“I think that the project is not finished and it can be a winning one. I am convinced, with all the hope in the world. The players believe in it and I have changed my mind.
“It is a cocktail of reasons that makes me continue, especially the confidence of the president, Deco and the players. It’s not a matter of money or ego. I saw everyone’s confidence.”
Asked if he regrets his announcement that he would leave, Xavi added: “The decision was correct because the club needed a change. It was transmitted to the president.
“Now it is wrong because I think the opposite. The young people and the staff have given me their support, in addition to the trust of the president and Deco.
“It made me reconsider and I have the energy to move forward. Changing my mind is wise.
“I will continue no matter what happens. My commitment is intact. It will not happen again. The trust they have given me is spectacular and now it’s time to work.”
