Real Madrid’s Champions League tie against Manchester City on Wednesday will decide the fate of Xabi Alonso.
That’s according to leading Spanish outlet El Mundo who say that sacking the former midfielder was even under consideration following a 2-0 defeat to Celta Vigo last night.
Madrid have only won once in their last five LaLiga games, going from leading the division by a five points to behind Barcelona by four.
There have also been big slip ups against Atletico Madrid and Liverpool where Madrid were comprehensively outplayed by big sides.
According to El Mundo, following the defeat to Celta: “The club’s top management met for several hours after the match in the offices at the Bernabéu to decide whether the manager would remain in his position.”
Worse than just the performances is the dressing room situation, with the outlet adding that fractions are ‘beyond repair’.
They finally add that both Jurgen Klopp and Zinedine Zidane lead the shortlist of replacements, with the pair seen as far better at man management.
