Xabi Alonso’s second season as Bayer Leverkusen head coach has hit another snag in the form of Sardar Azmoun.
BILD report that the Iranian striker not only returned from his Roma loan and summer break overweight, but that he also missed Monday’s first training session for the new season.
Alonso has opted to crack the whip and suspend Azmoun for the foreseeable while he tries to force him out of the door.
That will be difficult, though, with Roma not interested in bringing him back. Sevilla are reportedly keen, but only for a loan.
Azmoun represents one of a number of sophomore issues for Alonso, who is contending with Jonathan Tah and Jeremie Frimpong both pushing for departures.
There are certainly positives too, though, with Player of the Season Florian Wirtz staying, while Girona’s star man from the 2023/24 season, Aleix García, has joined the Alonso revolution.
