Vancouver Whitecaps and the MLS have been ordered to pay almost half-a-million to charity over a Lionel Messi advert.
Vancouver and the MLS used the Inter Miami forward in promotional material before a game in May 2024 but he was rested for the match and didn’t feature.
The Supreme Court of the Canadian province of British Columbia has now settled a class-action lawsuit saying both the club and league must pay 450,000 Canadian dollars to charity.
The plaintiffs accused the parties of using “misleading promotional material” during ticket sales for the game.
With disappointment clear on the day for the 50,000 in attendance, Vancouver offered a 50% discount on food and drink for those who came.
Vancouver have since had their fill of Messi, and are maybe sick of the sight of him, losing last season’s MLS cup final to the phenomenon.
