Valencia’s Mouctar Diakhaby has been given a shocking diagnosis of his knee injury suffered against Real Madrid.
The Guinean collided with Aurelien Tchouameni in a 2-2 draw and it was instantly clear he was in serious trouble.
Doctors in Spain have now confirmed things could have hardly gone worse for the defender.
Doctor Enrique Gastaldi, a famous orthopaedic surgeon, explained to SER radio that the injury suffered by Diakhaby ‘is horrible’: “The dislocation took away the anterior cruciate ligament and the posterior cruciate ligament.
“It is a very rare injury. It’s the most serious knee injury a football player can have. He probably tore four or five ligaments. It’s a wild injury.
“Think that when the knee is dislocated, it dislocates… the bone dislocates. This means that all the ligaments rupture, namely the anterior cruciate ligament, the posterior cruciate ligament, the lateral, external ligament.
“For the bone to move, all the ligaments have to be torn. And once the ligaments are torn, there can be a complication.
“One thing to always take into account in a knee dislocation is that there is no vascular injury.
“The popliteal artery comes from behind the knee and passes next to the bone. And when the bone comes out, it can tear the artery, the vein… or the nerve. These are very serious injuries from the start.
“With this type of injury, the first thing I have to check is that the patient can walk and that there are no more problems…. And we are not talking about work stoppage less than 9 or 12 months.
“With this type of injury, it is not necessary to give a time limit. And it may be necessary to have one or two operations.
Doctor Juan José López Martínez, added: “Unfortunately, it is a very serious injury and therefore there is a serious risk of not being able to play football again, because they generally damage the cartilage, which is a structure that does not regenerate.”
