There are World Cup humiliations, and there are South Korean World Cup humiliations.
The Asian country finished third in their group in the Americas and exited the competition at the first hurdle.
The exit came despite an opening win over Czechia that raised hopes of a decent run.
However, Korea lost their following two matches against Mexico and South Africa, and coach Myung-bo Hong had to pay the price in more ways that one.
Hong’s face blurred on TV
During his post-match media duties, state broadcaster KBS made the bonkers decision to obscure his face.
Then, rather incredibly, the country’s president got invovled.
Jae-Myung Lee wrote on social media: “A great disappointment caused by this unacceptable result.
“We will swiftly begin reforming the sports administration so that something like this never happens again.”
Hong resigns as South Korea coach
Shortly afterward, head coach Hong confirmed he was leaving.
“I sincerely apologize to the Korean public who supported our team,” he said in a statement.
“Today I am stepping down from my position.”
Hong had caused particular shock back home by dropping Premier League great Heung-Min Son from his line-up for the South Africa game.
President Lee commented: “When loyalty and factionalism are valued more highly than competence, and incompetent people are appointed to leadership positions, the outcome is almost inevitable.”
