Sampdoria’s absolutely bonkers Serie B season has taken another twist with the hospitalisation of members of their play-off rivals Salernitana.
Samp went 2-0 up in the home leg of their relegation play-off but now face the second leg being postponed after 16 members of Salernitana’s team were taken to hospital.
Ten of the 16 were players, and Corriere dello Sport says symptoms began on the flight back from Genoa after the defeat.
Multiple have now been discharged, but unsurprisingly Monday training was cancelled and the club have requested for the second leg on June 20 to be postponed.
The news is another extraordinary boost to Serie A giants Sampdoria who were already relegated to Serie C at the end of the league season.
However, they were given a shock lifeline by Brescia’s bankruptcy, lifting them out of the bottom three and into the two play-off spots above.
Now already 2-0 up, they could end up staying in the second tier just weeks after their relegation to the third had already been confirmed.
