Ruben Amorim and Viktor Gyokeres did it all together at Sporting, but the same can’t be said for Manchester United.
Amorim turned the Swede into an elite level striker and they won two titles together, setting Gyokeres up for a mega money move to the Premier League.
However, it won’t be a reunion with his old coach from Portugal, with a United approach rejected out of hand with the player preferring Arsenal.
That hasn’t gone down well either, with Record deputy director Vitor Pinto saying: “On a personal level, Ruben Amorim did not take well the cold way – I won’t say disrespectful – but cold, lacking empathy – in which Gyokeres communicated to Ruben Amorim that he wasn’t interested in representing Man United.
“In fact, Ruben Amorim’s main attack for this deal was the players’ willingness, because the agent immediately made things clear.
“So, Ruben Amorim tried with Gyokeres what he has tried many times in the past, like with Gyokeres himself when he was at Coventry. Which was to reach the player, to mobilize the player’s commitment to the Man United rebuilding project.
“Gyokeres pulled the rug from under Ruben Amorim.”
Pinto went on to claim that United could definitely afford the deal, and Gyokeres will leave, despite Sporting’s stubborness.
“Manchester United can handle the complexity of the financial operation. I’ve heard it myself,” he continued.
“Gyokeres is going, and maybe a few more will too. It’s just that the inflexible negotiating stance of Sporting.
“We’re seeing a player fully committed to a single cause. I hope it stays that way too. Sporting is holding a firm, single stance in the market. And Gyokeres is aligning himself with only one club.”
