Ronald Koeman Jr has cemented legendary status, becoming the hero of the Eredivisie for Telstar.
Telstar went behind early to relegation rivals Volendam, a result that would’ve put them in the bottom three.
However, they scored an equaliser to move back to two points ahead, before a later penalty was awarded with a minute on the clock.
Rather incredibly, Koeman, a goalkeeper, came up to take the spot kick.
The decision proved less risky than it seemed as he blasted home to secure Telstar’s place in the league next season.
The goal was the first by a goalkeeper since 2015, and Koeman was emotional post-match, particularly in regards to his parents, including Netherlands coach Ronald Snr.
But more his mother Bartina, who is dealing chronic breast cancer.
“I think my father and mother are very proud,” he said, fighting back tears. “It was a tough time.”
Asked about his goal, he added: “It was a rollercoaster, I took it once back in my youth, but I missed.
“I shot it in well, man, my heart rate was okay. I was first on the list and it was tense, but I hit the target.
“It was a tough year, but a great experience with the team. We will never forget this.”
His coach, Anthony Correia, said post-match: “Ronald Koeman Jr. is a legend, he deserves a statue.
“It’s really cool that he’s did it. The keeper can dive to the corner, but goodbye! He shot it so well.
“I’m normally not much of a drinker, but I am going to have a small beer now.
“They did a great job. This feels like a championship. I didn’t think we would get 37 points.”
Eredivisie final day
Elsewhere on the final day, Twente were smashed 5-1 by champions PSV.
That result allowed NEC to leapfrog them into the top three, booking a spot in the qualifying rounds for next season’s Champions League.
Twente head to the Europa League with KNVB Beker winners AZ, while Ajax, Utrecht, Heerenveen and Groningen go into the Conference League play offs.
