Al Hilal coach Jorge Jesus has come to the defence of Steven Bergwijn after his fallout with Ronald Koeman.
Netherlands coach Koeman dropped Bergwijn from his squad during the last international break and bluntly said it was due to him switching Ajax for Al Ittihad of the Saudi Pro League as the decision was based on finances and not sporting merit.
Koeman’s comments made headlines worldwide, and Bergwijn hit back. Now he’s had the support of an unlikely rival manager.
Last season’s Saudi Pro League champion coach, Jesus, had plenty of success in Portugal before swapping to the Middle East, and has now given his thoughts on both Koeman, and Bergwijn’s former league, the Eredivisie.
“The Eredivisie is one of the weakest leagues in Europe,” Jesus said.
“He (Koeman) is absolutely not in a position to make such statements. He knows nothing about the Saudi Pro League.
“The players who play here are in no way comparable to the players there. The Pro League is stronger than the Eredivisie.”
