Steven Bergwijn has had his say after Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman heavily criticised his move to Saudi Arabia.
Koeman went in two-footed on Bergwijn after he swapped Ajax for Al Ittihad, saying: “He’s going to Saudi Arabia at 26. It’s clear that this has nothing to do with sporting ambition. His adventure with the national team is over.”
Bergwijn, a former Netherlands regular, has now hit back, saying: “I don’t want to play under him anymore.
“He should have called me first, that’s what any other coach would have done.
“I found out on television what he said about me. It’s much too easy. I had great moments with him, that’s why I’m disappointed.
“He could have called me to get my version of the facts. He speaks when he hasn’t spoken to me. Yes, I’m 26. To make such a decision, you only have to be 32? I am 1000% convinced of my choice and happy in my new club.
“Playing for the Netherlands has always been an honour for me. But I can’t play for someone who badmouths me in the media. But who knows, maybe there will be a new coach in the future. That’s why I’m not closing the door. And I’ll continue to support my teammates, as they do for me. I’ve only received positive messages after my transfer. Everyone is happy for me.”
