With the Bundesliga heading to southern Europe for warm weather training, RB Leipzig have been left without a test match.
Leipzig are in Almancil in Portugal, but won’t be playing a friendly after failing to find a suitable opponent.
Kicker report that the team in fourth place have given up on lining up a match, but they haven’t offered further details on why.
Ahead of the 2024/25 season there was a similar situation, but the reasons were far more explicit.
Before starting their official pre-season campaign, Leipzig attempted to follow German traditions by playing a local lower league side.
However, games against Rot-Weiss Erfurt and SV Babelsberg were both called off over fan protests against the unpopular Red Bull owned side.
On this occasion it’s unclear why they couldn’t find an opponent, but the club have made it clear they’re not bothered.
Kicker add that Jürgen Klopp, their Head of Global Soccer, led a delegation that travelled to the training camp and was accompanied by his close associates Peter Krawietz and Zsolt Löw, as well as Technical Director Mario Gomez.
Their focus wasn’t on a friendly, but instead on a training match within the squad, with Leipzig recording back-to-back defeats before the winter break.
