Ahead of facing Napoli, Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola has recalled a career low in Italy from over two decades ago.
The Barcelona legend left his lifelong club in 2001 for Serie A side Brescia, only for that stint to be short-lived when he received a four-month doping ban, of which he was later cleared.
Guardiola was remembering Brescia and Napoli coach Carlo Mazzone during his pre-match press conference when he went off on a tangent.
“It was a privilege to know him in life, to learn from him,” he said.
“He also supported me in a difficult moment, when all the foreigners arriving in Italy that year were accused of doping.
“But the problem was in Milan, a training centre that had defrauded us: we were there and we got caught.
“Seven years later, they acquitted me. Maybe one day the Italian Football Federation will apologise to me, but I know that won’t happen…”
