Naby Keita and Werder Bremen has been a match made in hell, and thankfully it now looks all but over.
The midfielder signed from Liverpool in the summer of 2023 to much fanfare, but was instantly injured and never made an impact.
In his debut season he played just 107 minutes, less than the 177 he played for Guiena at AFCON during the campaign.
And then, on his return from injury in April reports emerged that he refused to travel to face Bayer Leverkusen after learning that his first game back would be on the bench.
Bremen confirmed those reports in a statement, and although they were contradicted by the player, he’s been suspended ever since, training with the reserves.
Despite saying he’d like to come back into the fold this season, Bremen have stuck to their guns, and now have finally been able to shift him.
The club confirmed on Tuesday that a loan deal has been agreed with Hungarian champions Ferencvaros of the Nemzeti Bajnokság I top flight.
In a statement, Bremen managing director Clemens Fritz said: “We are happy that we have found this solution together with Naby and his agent.
“It was clear to us that Naby would no longer play for Werder. Therefore, this loan is the right step for him and for us. We wish Naby much success in Hungary.”
Bremen also confirmed that the deal is for a year, starting in January. Keita’s deal with the German side lasts until June 1 2026, so both parties are likely hoping that Ferencvaros agree a six-month extension to keep him there until his time’s up.
