Roma secured a draw in their away match against Servette, complicating their chances of securing direct entry to the Europa League Round of 16, given their standing in Group G (trailing Slavia Prague by 2 points).
This situation pushed José Mourinho to the brink, and his frustration was not solely about the draw but more so about the team’s performance.
The Portuguese coach was notably critical, going as far as accusing some players of not giving due importance to the Europa League.
“We had our chances, but the beginning of the second half is a recurring issue for us,” he began.
“It’s unfortunate there’s no camera in the locker room at halftime because I always emphasize to them that the home team, when at a disadvantage, will come out with a fighting spirit.
“It’s a natural reaction, something we should anticipate. However, we displayed a superficial attitude, failing to interpret that crucial moment of the game.
“Some players once again missed the chance to showcase themselves, like Aouar.
The level of criticism heightened shortly afterward. “Many players show great attitude when sitting on the bench in Serie A, but in the Europa League, they seem lethargic, as if they’re unfamiliar with being substitutes and don’t contribute to the game.
“Now, we are heading for another playoff, which will be challenging as it’s against a team from the Champions League.
“Two more European games, one of them at the Olimpico with a packed stadium. I don’t want to dramatize going to the playoff.
“The real drama, if any, lies in the wrong attitude exhibited by these players and those who came in.
“I honestly don’t comprehend it. I’ve managed 150 Champions League games, which are more demanding, and it appears that some individuals lack a European history, playing these matches with minimal effort.
“There are those who give their all for the full 90 minutes and those who turn their nose up at this competition.”
