If there’s any doubt these days about Schalke’s status as one of Germany’s biggest sides, the hysteria around the club’s every move should put that to bed.
Just take the headlines after they opened the new season with a 2-1 win over Hertha Berlin.
Schalke held off their rivals in front of a sold out 62,000 capacity Veltins Arena, and they should have won comfortably during a thrilling first half against one of this season’s promotion favourites.
Muslic is already being praised for his impact since his controversial departure from Plymouth, but one small incident post-match has instead become the main news.
At full-time he marched straight over to the standing north curve to celebrate with the ultras, something various outlets think was unacceptable.
Among those was broadcasters Sport1, who wrote: “The fact that he’s embarking on such a solo celebration in his very first competitive game in front of a home crowd as head coach leaves a bitter aftertaste.
“It’s not appropriate. After all, the star is the team, not a single person—especially not on a debut.
“Even if it wasn’t his intention, the impression was created that someone was putting himself in the spotlight, especially above his own team.”
