French football may have landed one of its new great characters.
On Friday, Metz unveiled new goalkeeper signing Jonathan Fischer, arriving from Fredrikstad.
The 23-year-old Dane looked far younger than his age suggested, and then gave some child-like wonderment at his new career which will involve facing Ligue 1 and Champions League winners PSG.
“To be honest I don’t know much about the French league,” he honestly began before being asked about facing the Parisiens.
“I haven’t thought about it no. Two years ago I was a part time footballer and three years ago I was a substitute teacher in Denmark.
“So thinking about that is great and I try not to think too far ahead. I’m thinking about the game we have…” said before stopping himself.
“Actually no. I’m thinking about training tomorrow, then the game Saturday, then Strasbourg, then when the next game is PSG we can talk about PSG.”
Asked what qualities he will bring, he added: “Good shot stopper, quick on the line, good with the feet, capable of playing out from the back… hopefully that’s enough?”
The next question was about his first impressions of France, and he again cracked up the room.
“Lot of baguettes. Lot of baguettes,” he said. “I have to get used to the baguettes. The food is really good down here, and it’s quite exceptional compared to what I’m used to.”
