Mauricio Pochettino has gone after key USA winger Christian Pulisic after leaving him out of the team’s last two fixtures.
The former Tottenham and PSG coach dropped the AC Milan star for friendlies against Switzerland (4-0 loss) and Turkey (2-1 loss) and has now revealed he did so after Pulisic asked to be left out of the Gold Cup but wanted to play those friendlies.
“The players cannot choose the matches they want to play,” the Argentine said.
“The players do not need to understand or not understand the decisions. They must listen and respect our plan.
“They cannot dictate the plan to us. Otherwise, okay, we switch positions, right?
“It’s obvious. I am the head coach. I am not a dummy.”
The US are in the midst of a four-game losing run, a worrying spell as they co-host the World Cup in a year’s time.
