Manuel Neuer had one of the worst nights of his career against Real Madrid, but he’s far from the first goalkeeper to experience such a feeling in the Champions League.
The Bayern Munich legend allowed Real back into the game in the 88th minute when he dropped a howler, allowing Joselu to tap in and turn the game on its head.
Madrid progressed with a 2-1 win (4-3 agg.) and will now play Borussia Dortmund in the final, with Neuer likely blaming himself.
However, he’ll have some comfort, with a long list of fellow goalkeeping superstars managing similar moments.
In fact, according to Adrian Barrios of Stats Perform, Real Madrid have benefitted from 25 goalkeeper errors leading to goals since 2007/08, ahead of Liverpool and Manchester United on 12.
Liverpool’s Loris Karius in the 2018 final is the most obvious example with two in one game, but since then there’s been many more.
His replacement, Alisson Becker, joined in on the act with a huge gaffe in 2023, while Eduoard Mendy, Gigi Donnarumma and Marco Sportiello have all helped Madrid on their way to cup success.
In fact, before Karius’ horrorshow in 2018, his countryman, Sven Ulreich, helped Los Blancos to the final with a crucial shocker for Bayern just a round earlier.
