A trend is emerging at Real Madrid following the announcement that club captain Luka Modric will depart this summer.
The Croatian icon is departing seemingly before he wanted to leave the team where he became an all-time great.
He leaves just a year after being named captain, which is nothing new.
Previous to him Nacho Fernandez was given the armband in 2023, then offloaded to the Saudi Pro League the following summer.
Before that the same happened to Karim Benzema. The French legend won the Ballon d’Or and became Real Madrid captain, only to make a shock move to Al Ittihad a year later.
Marcelo was the first to set the trend, taking the captaincy in 2021, only to leave before he wanted as he was offloaded to Olympiacos.
Dani Carvajal will take over the armband from Modric next season, so he’ll surely be on watch for the summer of 2026.
